Finally got around to setting up a build log. Don't have the kit yet (supposed to ship this week!), but I'm documenting my engine rebuild/update and all the prep work etc. I'll be doing to the wiring.

So it finally arrived this week. Some initial imprssions:
Crate was really well done. Very solid. The Mazda-specific parts came in two unlabeled, unsealed bags. It's really hard to find exactly what you need, and you're always unsure if you've lost anything. The central panel for the top of the tunnel was pre-cut for the handbrake. And the hole was in completely the wrong place! Can't seem to find all the mounting hardware for the handbrake. In particular, there are no 65mm long M6 bolts anywhere to be found. The manual talks about bending a return on the tunnel side panel, but the panel is exactly the length of the tunnel, no more.
More on my build log, but thought I'd share a little here. So far, it's fun _________________ My BRG 7 build |

For the handbrake mounting bolts, I think most people went with the countersunk variety from a hardware store to remove any bulges from the carpet.
As far as the handbrake cutout, I had the same problem, but with the panel with the hole for the shifter. Had to fab a new panel. If you got all of your interior stuff, check to make sure you got the Mazda-specific carpet. I originally got a carpet with the shifter and handbrake boots already sewed in (nice) but in the wrong position (not so nice). |

The correct panels do exist but most folks get the wrong (Ford) ones. Just close the hole with some leftover alu panel and cut a new hole.
I had to get 3 complete sets of carpets before they got it right.
You could use rivnuts instead of through bolts to mount the handbrake. Install from the inside of the tunnel. Don't know how well rivnuts hold up in the long run though. I've already had a couple come loose. _________________ my Westfield

Curious to know what they got wrong with your carpet. Mine seems fine, though it has no holes in it for gearshift or handbrake, which might be a good thing given the issues others have had.
I elected to just use standard M8 bolts for now. If I don't like the way it bulges the carpet, I'll try to find countersunk ones, but I had a hard time locating them when I looked. _________________ My BRG 7 build |

Actually, now that I think about it, I've had 4 sets.
First set had wrong cutouts.
2nd set was wrong color.
3rd set was correct color but wrong fabric (not carpet but some very thin fabric like felt or something. I could stuff the entire carpet set in a small plastic bag). I suppose they got fed up with sending me carpets and they tried to give me something cheap.
After this, I asked my money back for the carpet set. They sent a 4th set instead, a correct one.
All this was over the course of about 9 months ... _________________ my Westfield

So what does a "correct" set look like - any cutouts? _________________ My BRG 7 build |

Mine had no cut outs and the gators for the gearshift and handbrake were supplied loose. It was easy enought to then cut the carpet exactly where I needed and stitch the gators in the right place.
Oh and my tunnel top panel had the cut-out in the right place but was 6" too short! _________________ www.mx5westfield.co.uk |
